30th KLRTC Workshop on Delivering Affordable Housing in Asia

From March 9th-11th, 2016, CityNet, Kuala Lumpur City and UN-Habitat held the 30th KLRTC Workshop on Affordable Housing in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

In this workshop, 14 participants from six countries discussed about the challenges and opportunities to provide of formal housing to the dwellers from informal settlements. Case studies from Pakistan, India and Malaysia were discussed, complemented by a site-visit to see the three generations of Malaysian Public Housing Developments. The facilitators from this workshop were Kirtee Shah and Claudio Acioly, both with long experience in affordable housing from different perspectives.

Big emphasizes was made on the importance of a participatory process both in the policy and process design, as well as in the house development, to be sure that these houses apply to their conditions. In many cases this derives into incremental construction that fits better the financial conditions of the owners.

CityNet hopes this workshop helps cities in the region to manage their slums and informal settlements in order to improve the conditions of its citizens.
