Climate Change Practitioners gather in Denpasar to share local innovations and sustainable urban solutions

CityNet held its Climate Leadership Program (CLP) Series 3 on November 18-20, 2019, hosted by Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia. The three-day program featured peer-based exchanges on innovative national and local climate actions, transformative leadership sessions, and development of local actions and prospects for sustainable city to city exchanges. This event was jointly organized by CityNet, Jakarta Capital City Government through the Climate Change Cluster, and Denpasar City as the host city.

In addition to enhancing their leadership capacities, CLP 3 served as a platform for participants to introduce prototypes of projects being implemented in their respective city. These projects introduced promising solutions to a variety of climate issues. These included a Waste to Energy project put forward by Sidoarjo Regency. Denpasar City’s Si Darling Public Transportation project also attracted a lot of interest due to its innovative use of a mobile application connecting the government and businesses to increase public awareness on waste issues.

Discussion on the Urban Innovation Session Marketplace also provided a space for participants to evaluate the project prototypes introduced to them and access with a replicability tool the ease through which they could implement these locally in their cities for their respective context.

Being the third instalment of the program, CLP 3 was also the occasion to see how prototypes introduced in previous CLP have been since replicated. Participants from HELP-O in Sri Lanka presented how they replicated in Galle City learning from Kampon-Iklim Climate City projects that were introduced in CLP 2.

Finally, the workshop also included site visits of best-practices and projects completed by the city of Denpasar. These consisted of Badung Market, a smart heritage market; Tukad Bindu, a community based project river; and Puri Agung Jrokuta, a cultural heritage site.
